From Burma to New York - The Stories of Burmese Refugees

"From Burma to New York" is a multimedia reporting project completed as a master's thesis at Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism. Over several months, the producers of the project witnessed the challenges and triumphs of Burmese refugees as they adjusted to life in an alien culture. In dozens of interviews, refugees gave remarkably similar accounts of escaping violence and oppression in their homeland. The U.S. plans to admit thousands of Burmese refugees in the next few years. Through this project, the producers hope that viewers will gain insight, into their stories of survival and brave attempts to build new lives. Viewers should note that Burma's official name is Myanmar. The ruling regime changed the country's name in 1989. The name change was not recognized by the United States or the United Kingdom.
